About Fruska gora



Fruška Gora is a mountain in north Srem. Sometimes, it is also referred to as jewel of Serbia, due to its beautiful landscape protection area, nature and its picturesque countryside. The mountain is a natural geological phenomenon as it is built from the rocks from almost all geological periods.[3] It used to be an island during the existence of the Pannonian Sea. To the north, the mountain is bordered by the Danube river, while to the south it descends into the lowlands. Lengthwise, it is approximately 80 km (50 mi) from east to west and is 15 km (9.3 mi) from north to south. Its highest peak is Crveni Čot at 539 m (1,768 ft). A national park Fruška Gora was declared in 1960 and covers an area of 266.72 km2 (102.98 sq mi). It is the oldest modern national park in Serbia. It is the area with the most Linden forest in Europe.


In Serbian, it is known as Fruška gora (pronounced [frûʃkaː ɡǒra], Фрушка гора), in Hungarian as Tarcal (also Almus-hegy or Árpatarló), in German as Frankenwald, and in Latin as Alma Mons. In Medieval Greek, it was known as Frangochoria.The mountain's name originates in the old Serbian word "Fruzi" of which singular form is "Frug"; and its adjective is Fruški, which was used for naming the Frankish people.[2] The name of "Fruška Gora" is "Frankish mountain" in English whose meaning is based on describing a historical event, viz, the mountain served as a natural border when Frankish campaigns were set up in the area.In the time of the Roman Empire, its name was Alma Mons, meaning the "fertile mount". It is recorded that during the reign of the emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus, 276-282, who was born in the nearby Sirmium, first grapevines were planted on the mountain.



In the endless greenery of these deciduous forests, on the glades of reigning mountain of the Pannonian Basin, 16 monasteries which are lasting for centuries and were built around 15th and 18th century in styles of Baroque and Morava architectural school of medieval Serbia. Due to its riches considering places of worship, Fruška gora is also called Holy Mountain or Serbian Atos. What also makes this mountain so extraordinary are its rich vineyards.



This small mountain is decorated with twelve artificial lakes, and one of the most beautiful ones, Lake of Ledinci, is dried out at the moment, but in a few years water will be re-pumped. Many of these lakes are perfect for fishermen, and the most popular ones for swimming are Bruja near Erdevik, with its small beach, and Sot which besides the beach also has catering establishments, and the best equipped and furnished certainly is the Borkovac lake, only 2 miles from Ruma.



The beauty of Fruska gora mountain enjoyed by people, herbs, and animals, habitants of Srem are explaining by stories and myths of old. Legend says that while God was creating the universe, resident of Srem had overslept, and came apologetically the following day. However, since God already gave everything away, he had no other choice but to give him a piece of Heaven. And that’s the reason why Srem is a land of Eden, because it has a mountain, Danube and Sava, plain, monasteries, everything your heart desires in a 10 mile radius. At Iriski venac top there is great lookout and also tourist info point is located there, near the WW2 monument.


If you wish to know Fruska Gora better, you can do it by walking along the marked hiking trails. There are 23 of them in this mountain and they have their specifics. All hiking trails are marked with different colors. They are called: blue, red, yellow, green, brown and black. The closest to our institution is track number 19, which is marked as a yellow trail and which starts in Rakovec and through Salaxie leads to Zmajevac top. For this 7.5km long adventure you need about three hours of walking. On this path, as we said, there is a hillside of SALAXIE, where our facility "WIND ROSE SALAXIE" is located. From Salaxie there are fantastic views on all sides, towards Fruska Gora to the south, east and west, and towards the north to the Danube, Futog and Novi Sad. If you continue this hillside over to the KESTEN (366m) top, you will cross the path with the Fruska Gora Transversal track marked with a red triangle and a white field in the middle. To the right there is a branch leading to the Rakovac monastery from the 10th century and on the left one that leads to the "Church in the wall".
